Research Article: “Hegemonic Masculinities”

Just out in War & Society (open access!): “Hegemonic masculinities and post-war reconciliation in Kenya during and after the Mau Mau Uprising (1952–60)”

I look at how Kenyatta and the Gikuyu elite folded former Mau Mau fighters into a conservative, patriarchal vision of nationhood, with ex-fighters as agents of this process, not just its victims. Through the Kikuyu Welfare Association, ethnic unity and male authority were reasserted, and redistributive alternatives were pushed aside. Reconciliation and exclusion turn out to be two sides of the same settlement.
